BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs; Ben Wright International Challenge Cup Golf Tournaments Join Forces for Week of Charity Golf
Spartanburg’s Ben Wright International Challenge Cup will kickoff a week of charity golf as part of the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament.
The Ben Wright International Challenge Cup, which benefits Spartanburg’s Mobile Meals charity, is the premier golf event in Spartanburg. Last year’s event featured 60 amateur teams on two golf courses. This year’s one-day event takes place Monday, April 28, 2003, and is expanding to three golf courses – The Spartanburg Country Club, Carolinas Country Club and The Cliffs at Glassy as it plays host to 90 amateur teams.
By partnering with the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs, participants of the Ben Wright International Challenge Cup receive tickets to the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament, invitations to celebrity parties, and PGA TOUR Nationwide Series pro participation at each course on Monday.
“We need BMW’s strong voice in the community,” Jack Robinson, Founder of the Ben Wright International Challenge Cup said. “This is a win-win situation. The tremendous success of The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs and the visibility it brings to the Upstate can only help raise awareness for our tournament. Our co-chairmen, Bill Painter and Mike Hall, will assist them as they move closer to their goal of involving the entire Upstate and Western North Carolina by promoting the event in Spartanburg.”
“We have always had a vision that this event, with the support of BMW, the PGA TOUR and the Cliffs Communities, would involve the entire Upstate and Western North Carolina, and be seen as ‘the happening,'” Doug McGrath, Chairman of the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs said. “To make that vision a reality, we had to create an event that was unique, professionally managed, touched a lot of people, plus excited the community and gave value to our sponsors. Our tournament highlights the hospitality of our communities, showcases the beauty of the Upstate and Western North Carolina, and improves the quality of life in our communities by giving back to those that are less fortunate. By partnering with the International Challenge Cup, our tournament is closer to meeting that goal – all while helping a great charity in Mobile Meals.”
Unlike the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament, which divides its earnings among many area charities, the Ben Wright International Challenge Cup donates all its proceeds to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, a non-profit group that serves 1,850 single-serve meals, five-days a week through its over 1,700 volunteers. Mobile Meals is entirely locally funded with contributions from the private sector. Mobile Meals’ goal is to begin serving two meals a day, with weekend delivery.
“This means so much more than just being able to donate money,” Jayne McQueen, President and CEO of Mobile Meals said. “This is also about outreach. This allows our volunteers to not only deliver much-needed food, but to personally talk and touch these individuals lives. For some of these people who can’t leave their homes, the contact with people is almost as important as the food we provide.”
The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament will be played May 1-4, 2003 at Cliffs Valley and The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards courses, where amateurs and celebrities will be grouped with PGA TOUR Nationwide Series professionals. All four rounds will be televised live by The Golf Channel.
The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament is the only Nationwide Series event that features professionals paired with an amateur/celebrity partner in a two-day best-ball competition. The 14 best teams (10 best Pro-Celeb and four best Pro-Am) advance to play for the BMW Charity Cup on Saturday. The professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $103,500 from the total purse of $575,000, while the amateurs/celebrities will compete for individual prizes and cash donations to the charity of their choice.
South Carolina Charities, Inc., a foundation supported in part by BMW Manufacturing Corp., is in the process of determining which celebrities will participate in the 2003 tournament, as well as which area charities will receive proceeds.
