BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs Celebrity Update
Actor Kevin Costner will not attend this week’s BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament due to a project he is producing, directing and starring in.
“I regret that I can’t be there,” Costner said. “It was a last minute decision. I had a terrific experience a year ago. The people and facilities were wonderful. Unfortunately, in the entertainment industry, these things sometimes happen. I look forward to returning next year.”
“We can’t lose sight of what this tournament is about: helping charities,” said Doug McGrath, General Chairman of the Tournament. “We are hoping to raise over $525,000 for area charities. The community supports this event as evidenced by the approximately 1,500 volunteers that will help out, and by the record number of tickets that we’ve sold. We have a world-class sponsor in BMW Manufacturing Corp., a world-class facility in The Cliffs, world-class professional golfers, and accessible celebrities. We are very excited about showcasing our community and hospitality during the four days of live coverage on The Golf Channel.”
Four other celebrities have confirmed their participation in this week’s tournament, which begins Thursday, April 25 at The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards and Cliffs Valley (all celebrities play the Keowee Vineyards course on Thursday and the Cliffs Valley course Friday and Saturday). The four new participants are: former Georgia tech basketball coach Bobby Cremins; actor Kevin Dillon; actor Jimmy McCaffrey; and actor Terry O’Quinn.
Cremins was head coach of the Georgia Tech basketball team for 19 years before retiring at the end of the 1999-’00 season. He led the Yellow Jackets to three Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championships (’84-’85; ’89-’90; ’92-’93), the NCAA Final Four (’89-’90), and was named ACC Coach of the Year in ’83, ’85, and ’96, and National Coach of the Year in 1990. Cremins played college basketball for Frank McGuire at The University of South Carolina.
Actor Kevin Dillon, who participated and finished third in last year’s Celebrity Cup, has most recently appeared in episodes of NYPD Blue. He is best known for his roles as “Bunny” in the action/drama movie Platoon, and as band member John Densmore in the hit movie The Doors.
Irish-born actor Jimmy McCaffrey has starred in the hit TV series Viper, and has guest starred in Sex in the City, Law & Order, New York Undercover and The Truth About Cats and Dogs. He attended the University of New Haven on a football, baseball and fine arts scholarship.
Actor Terry O’Quinn is best known for his starring role in the television series Millennium. He also appeared in such movies as Murder in a Small Town, The Rocketeer, Tombstone, Black Widow and Young Guns, as well as television appearances on The X-Files, Alias and JAG.
Other celebrities scheduled to appear include: actor John O’Hurley, who played J. Peterman on the hit TV series Seinfeld; actor Jamie Farr, who played the unforgettable “Klinger” on the hit television series M*A*S*H; television talk-show host Maury Povich; former No. 1 world ranked tennis great Jim Courier; golf course designer and golf analyst Ben Wright; Jennifer Mills, a Greenville native who is currently an anchor/reporter for The Golf Channel; award-winning musician Edwin McCain; Rudy and Steve Gatlin of the country music band The Gatlin Brothers; current NFL quarterback Mark Rypien; former NHL stars Pierre LaRouche and Dan Quinn; former Major League Baseball player Andy Van Slyke; former professional football quarterbacks Steve Bartkowski, John Congemi and Billy Joe Tolliver; and Heisman Trophy winner and former University of South Carolina and NFL running back George Rogers.
