BMW Expands Investment in South Carolina to $800 Million
BMW will invest an additional $200 million at its South Carolina manufacturing facilities, bringing its total investment in the state to more than $800 million.
Construction, which will begin immediately, will add about 300,000 square feet of manufacturing space in the Body and Assembly areas to the 1.2-million-square-foot plant. The expansion increases the daily capacity from 300 units to 400. The plant’s Paint Shop already is rated at 400 units per day.
“BMW has decided to significantly increase its investment in South Carolina and in the United States,” said Dr. Helmut Panke, chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp. “Today’s announcement is a tribute to the quality of the teamwork and partnership that BMW and South Carolina have accomplished, and our confidence in what we will yet accomplish as we move toward the 21st century.”
Al Kinzer, president of BMW Manufacturing Corp., commented, “This added investment can also be viewed as a vote of confidence in the men and women of South Carolina. They have been instrumental in our delivering world-class quality to our customers.”
The investment allows BMW to expand the Body and Assembly departments, while maintaining the plant’s single line production concept. The changes also enhance the body shop’s flexible design, which allows multiple models to be built on the same production line.
BMW 3-Series sedans and Z3 roadsters are built at the Spartanburg County facility, which is the first full BMW manufacturing plant to be located outside Germany. Currently, there are more than 1,500 associates in the Spartanburg County facility.
