BMW Manufacturing to Add Additional Production Shifts Will Hire Up To 700 Temporary Workers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - 10/09/2009

BMW Manufacturing Co. announced today the addition of two production shifts at the plant in Spartanburg. To support these additional shifts, BMW’s contract agencies, MAU, Inc and Tier One Solutions will be hiring up to 700 workers.

“BMW continues to guarantee our plant’s flexibility to efficiently respond to market demand,” stated Josef Kerscher, President of BMW Manufacturing. “In order to meet customer demand, our plant must maintain its ability to adjust shifts and staffing levels as needed. The market is a rollercoaster right now.”

As MAU and Tier One Solutions begin their hiring process, they will contact people who have previously worked at BMW to determine their ability to return to the plant.

BMW will add one additional shift immediately and another is scheduled for early November. In 2008, the plant operated at 110 production hours. In 2009, as customer demand waned, the plant reduced its production hours to 80 hours per week. The first additional shift will increase the plant’s total production hours to 90 and the November shift will put the plant at operating 100 production hours per week.

“The additional shifts and temporary workers have been added as a direct result of an increase in year-end market demand for our products,” according to Bobby Hitt, Department Manager for Public Affairs at BMW Manufacturing. “In order to sustain BMW’s customer oriented production system, BMW uses various staffing models to effectively respond to fluctuations in market demand. Staffing for these additional shift models is designed to meet the current demand.”

BMW Manufacturing Co. is a subsidiary of BMW AG in Munich, Germany and is the global producer of the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and X6 Sports Activity Coupe. In addition to the South Carolina manufacturing facility, BMW North American subsidiaries include sales, marketing and financial services operations in the United States, Canada and throughout Latin America; and a design firm and technology office in California.
