BMW receives W.A.I.T. Certification for ITRC Facility
BMW received its second Wildlife and Industry Together (W.A.I.T.) certification from the South Carolina Wildlife Federation for its Information Technology Research Center (ITRC). BMW constructed a wildlife viewing area, nature trails and a W.A.I.T. garden behind its ITRC facility located on the Clemson University’s ICAR campus. This is BMW’s second project to receive this distinction. In 1998, BMW Manufacturing received its first certification at the factory for its Butterfly Garden.
“BMW’s deep commitment to the environment and other sustainable initiatives are visible in the environmental development of the ITRC and its grounds. Greenway restoration enables us the ability to implement on-site educational and community-based programs that support South Carolina’s objective to protect and enhance the wildlife on corporately-owned land,” said Bobby Hitt, department manager for public affairs at BMW Manufacturing.
The South Carolina Wildlife Federation’s W.A.I.T. program is designed to encourage corporate landowners to integrate wildlife habitat needs into corporate land management decisions. Ben Gregg, Executive Director for South Carolina Wildlife Federation, explains “As South Carolina becomes increasingly developed; there is less land available for wildlife. We are grateful for corporate citizens, like BMW, to support the native habitat by developing programs such as these.”
To complement the existing greenway system behind BMW’s ITRC, BMW has developed a wildlife viewing area complete with educational signage, creation of public walking trails and an outdoor seating area replete with a garden that features many South Carolina native plants including Muhly grass, Cardinal flower, Black Eyed Susan’s, Cone Flowers, Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron. The garden serves to increase plant diversity and bird populations. In addition, Clemson University has begun a more expansive stream restoration project throughout the CU-ICAR campus to add additional bird houses, outdoor gardens and seating areas and additional native plantings.
