Celebrity Commitments Announced for 2013 BMW Charity Pro-Am
The celebrity commitments for the 13th annual BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation were announced today at the tournament’s Media Day, held at the BMW Performance Center.
Twenty-four celebrities are scheduled to compete in this year’s tournament including first-time participant Craig T. Nelson. Eight celebrities are returning after not participating in recent years including George Lopez, Kurt Russell, Wayne Gretzky, Janet Jones-Gretzky, Michael Pena, Edwin McCain, Javier Colon and Brad Brownell. Celebrities returning from 2012 include Anthony Anderson, Steve Azar, Mark Bryan, Andy Buckley, Jay DeMarcus, Jeffrey Donovan, Dean Felber, Oliver Hudson, Danny Masterson, Terry O’Quinn, Joe Don Rooney, Wyatt Russell, Paula Trickey, Gary Valentine and Patrick Warburton.
“We’re excited to be able to host such a great group of celebrities in Greenville during tournament week,” said the tournament’s executive director Darin MacDonald. “And at only $10 for a Daily ticket, spectators are getting an amazing value. We hope the community comes out to the tournament to support the charities and cheer on the celebrity contestants.”
Actor Anthony Anderson can currently be seen on the NBC comedy Guys With Kids. He is also well-known for his role on NBC’s Emmy Award-winning drama Law & Order as well as his roles on All About the Andersons and The Bernie Mac Show. Anderson has appeared in more than 20 films including Transformers and The Departed. This will be Anderson’s second time participating in the tournament.
Steve Azar is a country music artist. His biggest hit, “I Don’t Have To Be Me (Til Monday)”, is from his album Waitin’ On Joe. Azar’s other albums include Heartbreak Town, Indianola and Slide On Over Here. This is Azar’s fifth appearance.
Actor Andy Buckley is best known for his role as David Wallace on NBC’s hit comedy The Office. Buckley currently plays Dr. Ted Mercer on the ABC Family show The Lying Game and can also be seen as in the box office hit Bridesmaids, HBO’s Veep and The Other Guys with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. This will be his third time playing in the tournament.
Brad Brownell is the head coach of the Clemson University men’s basketball team. This will be Brownell’s second appearance at the tournament.
Mark Bryan is a founding member, songwriter and the guitar player for multi-platinum Hootie & the Blowfish. This will be Bryan’s fifth time playing in the tournament.
Musician Javier Colon is best known for winning Season 1 of NBC’s The Voice. Before winning The Voice, Colon was a member of The Derek Trucks Band and worked with many musicians before going solo. This will be Colon’s ninth appearance.
Jay DeMarcus is the bass guitarist, harmony vocalist, pianist, record producer and songwriter in the multi-platinum-selling country-pop group Rascal Flatts. This will be DeMarcus’s second time participating in the tournament.
Actor Jeffrey Donovan is well known for his starring role in USA Network’s Burn Notice as well as supporting roles in movies such as Hitch with Will Smith and J. Edgar with Leonardo DiCaprio. This will be his third appearance.
Dean Felber is a founding member and bass guitar player for multi-platinum Hootie & the Blowfish. This will be Felber’s fifth time playing in the tournament.
Wayne Gretzky, “The Great One,” is regarded as the best player in the history of the National Hockey League. He holds or shares 61 NHL records, including the most points ever scored at 2,856. This will be the seventh time participating in the tournament.
Actor Oliver Hudson currently stars in the CBS comedy Rules of Engagement alongside David Spade and fellow tournament participant Patrick Warburton. This will be Hudson’s sixth time playing in the tournament.
Janet Jones-Gretzky, wife of Wayne Gretzky, appeared as a dancer in the films Annie and Staying Alive. She also appearances in the films Police Academy 5 and A League of Their Own. This will be her seventh time playing in the tournament.
George Lopez is an American comedian, actor, and talk show host well-known for starring in his self-produced ABC sitcom George Lopez. He also appeared in six seasons of The George Lopez Show and has had roles in movies such as Valentine’s Day, The Spy Next Door, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. This will be Lopez’s second time playing in the tournament.
Actor Danny Masterson can currently be seen on the TBS series Men At Work. He is well-known for his role as Steven Hyde in TBS’s That ‘70s Show. This will be Masterson’s second appearance.
Singer/songwriter Edwin McCain latest album, Mercy Bound, is his tenth album debut for 429 Records. The songs comprising Mercy Bound, are the fruits of an on-again, off-again collaboration with fellow singer/songwriter Maia Sharp. Over the last two decades, Edwin McCain has morphed into a road warrior, gigging throughout North America most of each year. This will be McCain’s third time playing in the tournament.
Actor Craig T. Nelson currently stars in the hit TV series Parenthood, and is best known for his Emmy-winning role as Hayden Fox on the hit TV series Coach. His most recent films include The Proposal and The Company Men. This will be Nelson’s first year participating in the tournament.
Terry O’Quinn is well-known for his role as John Locke on the TV series LOST, for which he won an Emmy in 2007. He also made numerous appearances in CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 and has had minor supporting roles in many films and TV series including Young Guns, The West Wing and JAG. This will be O’Quinn’s fifth time playing in the tournament.
Actor Michael Pena is perhaps best known for his role in Shooter alongside Mark Wahlberg. Other films include Crash, World Trade Center, Observe and Report, 30 Minutes or Less, Tower Heist, and End of Watch. This will be Pena’s fifth time playing in the tournament.
Joe Don Rooney is the lead guitarist and harmony singer in the multi-platinum-selling country-pop group Rascal Flatts. This will be Rooney’s sixth time playing in the tournament.
Actor Kurt Russell has starred in numerous films including his role as Wyatt Earp in Tombstone. Other notable films include Silkwood, Vanilla Sky, 3000 Miles to Graceland and Backdraft. Russell will be making his sixth appearance at the tournament.
Actor Wyatt Russell can be seen in films including This is 40 and Cowboys and Aliens. Russell is also a talented hockey player, playing for teams in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands. Russell is the son of actor Kurt Russell and actress Goldie Hawn. This will be his fourth time playing in the tournament.
Actress Paula Trickey starred in the USA Network series Pacific Blue and also had recurring roles on shows such as The O.C., Beverly Hills, 90210 and Walker, Texas Ranger. This is Trickey’s fourth time participating in the tournament.
Actor and comedian Gary Valentine has appeared in films such as Paul Blart: Mall Cop and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and, most recently, Here Comes The Boom. Valentine had a recurring role on the CBS comedy The King of Queens. This is Valentine’s seventh time participating in the tournament.
Patrick Warburton can currently be seen on the CBS series Rules of Engagement alongside Oliver Hudson and David Spade. He is perhaps best known for his role as David Puddy on the hit series Seinfeld. Warburton has lent his voice to several animated films and TV series including The Emperor’s New Groove, Family Guy and Kim Possible. This is Warburton’s fifth time playing in the tournament.
The 2013 BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation will take place May 16-19 at Thornblade Club, Greenville Country Club’s Chanticleer course and, new for 2013, The Reserve at Lake Keowee.
The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation is the only tournament on the PGA TOUR’s Web.com Tour where amateurs and celebrities are grouped with Web.com Tour professionals in a four-day better-ball competition over three courses. Amateurs, celebrities and pros rotate between three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the 16 lowest scoring pro-amateur/pro-celebrity teams advancing to play Sunday’s final round at Thornblade Club. Celebrities play once at each course on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $117,000 from the total purse of $650,000.
Since 2001, the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation has raised more than $9.25 million for 150+ charities. The tournament is a leading charity event on the Web.com Tour.
The 2013 charities include: 100 Black Men of the Upstate, Child Evangelism Fellowship of Greenville, Child Evangelism Fellowship of Spartanburg, Dogs for Autism, The First Tee of Greenville, Greenville Tech Foundation, Inc., Harvest Hope Food Bank, JDRF – Greater Western Carolinas Chapter, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), New Foundations Home for Children, Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services (PAALS), Play Safe, Inc., The Reserve at Lake Keowee Charitable Foundation, Ronald McDonald House of the Carolinas, Scottish Rite Foundation, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Greenville, Spiritual Two-A-Days, and The Walker Foundation for the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind.
The charities earn funds through tournament-sponsored programs including ticket sales, volunteer recruitment, and one-day pro-am team sales.
When patrons purchase tickets online at www.bmwcharitygolf.com, 100 percent of the purchase price of$10, $25 and $50 tickets can be donated to one of the tournament’s charities. Volunteers can earn funds for their favorite tournament charity by choosing one of the 20 charity partners to benefit from their workdays as a volunteer. Also, charities that sell a team in one of the tournament’s one-day pro-ams will retain 50% of the purchase price.
Complimentary daily grounds admission is granted for all active duty, retired, Reserve military and veterans, along with their dependents; a valid ID is required for entry. Complimentary daily grounds admission is also granted to all youth 14 and under who are accompanied by an adult ticket holder.
Founded, owned and operated by the PGA TOUR, the Web.com Tour identifies those players who are ready to compete and win on golf’s greatest stage. Beginning in 2013, all 50 available PGA TOUR cards for each new season will come through the Web.com Tour.
