Eight Local Pros to Play, Celebrity Updates Announced

Greenville, SC - 05/05/2014

Officials from South Carolina Charities, Inc. announced today that eight local pros will play in the upcoming Web.com Tour event: Daniel Bowden, Corbin Mills, Crawford Reeves and Kyle Thompson will play via sponsor exemptions, and Matt Bettencourt, Justin Bolli, Matt Davidson and Matt Hendrix will play via Web.com Tour membership.

“Having eight local pros participating in the tournament is proof that we have a significant pool of talent here in the Upstate,” said Darin MacDonald, Executive Director of South Carolina Charities, Inc., the non-profit organization that manages the tournament. “The Web.com Tour brings so much excitement to the sport of golf, giving the next Bill Haas or Bubba Watson a competitive stage to play on. It’s great to host a Tour event here in the Upstate and have some of our own shine on that stage.”

Officials also announced several celebrity updates including the addition of actors Gregory Itzin, Rob Morrow, Frankie Muñiz and Richard Schiff. The Gretzky family also joins the lineup including Wayne, Janet and son Ty. It was also revealed that the following celebrities are no longer able to play in the event due to schedule conflicts: Anthony Anderson, Catherine Bell, Jeffrey Donovan, Josh Kelley and Greg Kinnear. These changes bring the total celebrity count to 27.

“We’re sorry to see some familiar faces have to bow out of participating in this year’s tournament, but we wish them the best in their upcoming projects,” said MacDonald. “That said, we’re excited to welcome Gregory and Frankie to the tournament and to have Rob, Richard and the Gretzkys joining our line up again.”

Wayne Gretzky, “The Great One,” is regarded as the best player in the history of the National Hockey League. He holds or shares 61 NHL records, including the most points ever scored at 2,856. This will be the eighth time partici-pating in the tournament.

Gregory Itzin is an accomplished actor who has been featured in over a hundred different projects in film and television but is perhaps best known for his Emmy-nominated role as disgraced U.S. President Charles Logan in the television series “24.” Other notable television appearances include recurring roles on “Friends,” “Navy NCIS,” “Boston Legal” and “JAG,” as well as guest-starring roles on “The West Wing,” “Without a Trace” and “CSI: Las Vegas.” This will be Itzin’s first time playing in the tournament.

Janet Jones-Gretzky, wife of Wayne Gretzky, appeared as a dancer in the films Annie and Staying Alive. She also had appearances in the films “Police Academy 5” and “A League of Their Own.” This will be her eighth time playing in the tournament.

As an Emmy and Golden Globe nominee, Rob Morrow is a critically acclaimed actor, writer, and director with an established career in television spanning more than three decades. He is well known for his role on the early 90s TV series “Northern Exposure” and for his recent role on CBS’s “Numb3rs.” This will be Morrow’s third time playing in the tournament.

Frankie Muñiz is an actor, musician, writer, producer and race car driver. He is known primarily as the star of the FOX television family sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle,” which earned him an Emmy Award nomination and two Golden Globe Award nominations. In 2008, he put his acting career on hold to pursue an open wheel racing career, competing in the Atlantic Championship. In 2012, he joined the band Kingsfoil as a drummer. This will be Muñiz’s first time playing in the tournament.

Actor Richard Schiff is best known for playing Toby Ziegler on the NBC television drama “The West Wing,” a role for which he received an Emmy. Schiff can also be seen on other popular television shows including “Criminal Minds,” “House of Lies” and “NCIS.” This will be Schiff’s second time playing in the tournament.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation is the only tournament on the Web.com Tour where 168 amateurs and celebrities are grouped with 168 Web.com Tour professionals in a four-day better-ball competition over three courses. Amateurs, celebrities and pros rotate between the three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with celebrities playing once at each course by the end of Saturday’s third round.

After 54 holes, the 10 lowest scoring pro-am teams, six lowest scoring celebrity pro-am teams and 65 low Web.com Tour pros (and ties) will advance to play Sunday’s final round at Thornblade Club. The Professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $117,000 from the total purse of $650,000. The 10 lowest scoring amateurs (non-celebrities) who play in Sunday’s final round will compete for a share of the $16,000 Kentwool Charity Purse. Amateurs’ winnings will be donated to the tournament beneficiary of their choice, chosen from the 2014 list of 25 organizations.

Since 2001 more than 109 celebrities have participated in the tournament.
