Elway; Schmidt Withdraw from BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs Golf Tournament
Former NFL quarterback John Elway and former Major League Baseball third baseman Mike Schmidt will not participate in next week’s second-annual BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament as previously committed.
“Mike (Schmidt) regretfully had to withdraw due to illness that kept him in the hospital all of this week,” Doug McGrath, General Chairman of the tournament, said. “John (Elway) just learned that he was granted an NFL franchise and is deeply mired in that process. Both expressed disappointment in not being able to make it this year. I am disappointed, but it is understandable. I feel bad for their fans who had been looking forward to seeing them up close and personal ever since we began publicizing their involvement.”
Celebrities that will participate in this year’s tournament include: Actor Kevin Costner; actor John O’Hurley, who played J. Peterman on the hit TV series Seinfeld; soap opera star Jack Wagner; actor Jamie Farr, who played “Klinger on the hit TV show M*A*S*H*; television talk-show host Maury Povich; award-winning musician Edwin McCain; Rudy and Steve Gatlin of the country music band The Gatlin Brothers; tennis great Jim Courier; current NFL quarterbacks Chris Chandler and Mark Rypien; former NHL standouts Pierre LaRouche and Dan Quinn; former professional football quarterbacks Steve Bartkowski, John Congemi and Billy Joe Tolliver; Heisman Trophy winner and former South Carolina and NFL running back George Rogers; and Jennifer Mills, a Greenville native who is currently an anchor/reporter for The Golf Channel.
The tournament will be played April 25-28, 2002, at Cliffs Valley and The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards. All four rounds will be televised live by The Golf Channel.
The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament is the only BUY.COM TOUR event that features professionals paired with an amateur/celebrity partner in a two-day best-ball competition.
