Glover & Hull Earn Exemptions for BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs Tournament
Local golfer Lucas Glover and Californian Brian Hull have been awarded the two coveted exemptions to participate in April’s BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament. The tournament will be played April 25-28, 2002, at Cliffs Valley and The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards.
Glover, a former Clemson University standout from Greenville, S.C., was an All-America for the Tigers in 2000 and 2001, and All-Atlantic Coast Conference from 1998-2001. He recorded 19 top-10 finishes during his college career, including winning three tournaments. Glover was a member of the 2001 U.S. Walker Cup team, a 2000 and 2001 Palmer Cup team member, and won the 2001 Sunnehanna Amateur. Golfweek magazine writer Ron Balicki said of Glover, “He’s fast, he’s long, and he’s bursting with talent.” Glover was college teammates with last year’s tournament winner Jonathan Byrd.
Hull, who is sponsored by Kevin Costner on the BUY.COM TOUR, is from Manhattan Beach, Calif. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1997 and turned pro the same year.
The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament is the only BUY.COM TOUR event that features professionals paired with an amateur/celebrity partner in a two-day best-ball competition. The 12 best teams (eight best Pro-Celeb and four best Pro-Am) advance to play for the BMW Charity Cup on Saturday. The professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $94,500 from the total purse of $525,000, while the amateurs/celebrities will compete for individual prizes and cash donations to the charity of their choice. All four rounds will be televised live by The Golf Channel.
Coming off of a stellar inaugural event that brought actor Kevin Costner and future NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback Dan Marino to the Upstate, last April’s tournament raised $500,000 for 30 Upstate and Western N.C. charities. That is a record on the PGA TOUR for the most money ever raised from a first-time BUY.COM event.
Costner, Marino, Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Johnny Bench, actor John O’Hurley, singers Darius Rucker and Edwin McCain, and Jennifer Mills, a Greenville native who is currently an anchor/reporter for The Golf Channel, are among the celebrities that have already agreed to participate in this year’s event. More celebrity announcements are forthcoming.
