Hitt Resigns Post at BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation to Serve as S.C. Secretary of Commerce
Bobby Hitt, retired manager of corporate affairs at BMW Manufacturing Co., has resigned his post as Chairman of the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation and as President of South Carolina Charities, Inc., the foundation that manages the event, to pursue his new role as the S.C. Secretary of Commerce.
Hitt was the primary force behind the tournament’s creation, and in 2000 he established goals that would become SCCI’s mission. The goals were to bring professional sport and celebrity participants to the Upstate, provide a fun and affordable event for the community and showcase the Upstate to an international audience all while raising funds for local charities.
Hitt’s collaboration with the PGA TOUR helped to bring his vision to life, and these goals have been achieved consistently each year of the tournament. Celebrities such as Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell have become friends of the tournament, and the international exposure on the Golf Channel’s live telecast has brought much attention to the Upstate.
During his tenure, the tournament has raised nearly $8 million for over 150 Upstate S.C. and Western N.C. charities and has generated an estimated $70 million in economic impact for the Upstate over 10 years. Per the PGA TOUR, the economic impact of a Nationwide tournament is $7 million per year.
“What a blast this event has been for me,” Hitt said. “Not only did the tournament attract celebrities to our region and raise millions of dollars for charity, economic development professionals in our communities used the event to showcase the Upstate region. And we had the added excitement of watching hundreds of young golfers from our region and around the world earn their way to the PGA TOUR.”
As Hitt steps down to fulfill his role as the new S.C. Secretary of Commerce, he has committed to stay involved as an honorary board member. Bob Nitto, BMW North America Vice President of Government Affairs, and an original board member who together with Hitt established the tournament in 2000, has been elected President of the host foundation. Irv Welling, retired chairman emeritus of Elliott Davis, and Max Metcalf, current Manager of Communications at BMW Manufacturing Co., will serve as Co-Chairmen of the Pro-Am.
“For the 11th year, the tournament will continue in its great tradition as a world class event, showcasing our region and providing a superb entertainment venue for our area businesses,” Nitto said.”Please join us in supporting our charities. A limited number of playing spots and entertainment packages remain available.”
Mike Wood, President/CEO of American Storage, will serve as Vice President of the foundation. Max Metcalf, in addition to serving as a Co-Chairman of the Pro-Am, will also serve as the Secretary/Treasurer of South Carolina Charities, Inc. Mike Munafo, Vice President of Finance for OmniSource, and Bob Stegner, Senior Vice President Marketing, North America for SYNNEX Corporation, will serve as Directors of the foundation.
The 2011 BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation will be played May 19-22, at Bright’s Creek Golf Club, The Carolina Country Club and Thornblade Club golf courses.
The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation is the only tournament on the PGA TOUR’s Nationwide Tour where amateurs and celebrities are grouped with Nationwide Tour professionals in a four-day better-ball competition over three courses. Amateurs, celebrities and pros rotate between three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the 14 lowest scoring pro-amateur/pro-celebrity teams advancing to play Sunday’s final round at Thornblade Club. Celebrities play once at each course on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $108,000 from the total purse of $600,000. Amateurs and celebrities will compete for individual prizes and cash donations to the charity of their choice out of the beneficiaries selected by South Carolina Charities, Inc.
