Hootie & The Blowfish Concert; Celebrity Walk of Fame to Highlight BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs Special Events

GREENVILLE, S.C. - 03/18/2003

Grammy award-winning rock ‘n roll band Hootie & The Blowfish will perform at The Peace Center Amphitheatre, Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. as part of the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament. The concert is a way for the South Carolina-rooted band to help the 48 Upstate and western N.C. charities benefiting from the golf tournament, which will be played May 1-4, 2003, at Cliffs Valley and The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards golf courses.

Fans are also expected to gather around the Westin Poinsett Hotel, Thursday evening, May 1, between 6:30-7 p.m. for the FujiFilm Celebrity Walk of Fame, where celebrities participating in the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs will assemble to greet fans. The first 400 people to arrive will receive free Fuji cameras to take pictures of the celebrities.

A limited number of general admission tickets are available for the Hootie & The Blowfish concert at the Peace Center box office for $40 beginning Wednesday, March 19. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m. For more information on concert tickets, contact The Peace Center box office at 467-3000.

Opening for Hootie & The Blowfish will be Radio Society, a three-piece acoustic act featuring Rick Reames on bass, guitar, vocals and percussion. Reames was originally a member of the popular southeast party band The Next Move, and was a founding member of Cravin’ Melon, which used to open for Hootie & The Blowfish. Radio Society performs a variety of classical songs, but also plays altered arrangements in an acoustic format.

Hootie & The Blowfish are best known for their 1994 debut album, Cracked Rear View, which won two 1995 Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Pop Duo/Group. The album featured such hits as, “Only Wanna Be With You,” “Hold My Hand,” and “Let Her Cry,” and was certified platinum 16 times, tying it with Boston’s self-titled album and Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill as the No. 1 best-selling debut album of all time. One of the most commercially successful adult contemporary groups of the mid-90s, Hootie & The Blowfish just released a self-titled album, their first release in nearly five years.

The Hootie & The Blowfish concert and the Celebrity Walk of Fame will highlight a week of activities surrounding the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs golf tournament will be played May 1-4, 2003 at Cliffs Valley and The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards courses, where amateurs and celebrities will be grouped with Nationwide PGA Tour professionals. All four rounds will be televised live by The Golf Channel.

The tournament is the premier event on the Nationwide PGA Tour and is the only event that features professionals paired with an amateur/celebrity partner in a two-day best-ball competition. The 14 lowest scoring teams (10 Pro-Celeb and four Pro-Am) advance to play for the BMW Charity Cup on Saturday. The professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $103,500 from the total purse of $575,000, while the amateurs/celebrities will compete for individual prizes and cash donations to the charity of their choice out of the 48 beneficiaries selected by South Carolina Charities, Inc.

The first two tournaments have raised over $1 million for charity.

Celebrities that are scheduled to participate in the tournament include: Samuel L. Jackson, Cheech Marin, Michael O’Keefe, John O’Hurley, Gabrielle Reece, Jim Courier, Hootie & The Blowfish, the Gatlin Brothers, Ben Wright, Jennifer Mills, George Rogers and Steve Bartkowski. Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus is the featured golfer.
