The BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs, which will be played April 25-28, 2002, at Cliffs Valley and The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards courses, was created to raise money for regional charities, promote quality of life in the Upstate and Western N.C., and increase community pride by involving thousands of residents as volunteers and spectators.
April’s inaugural event, which brought actor Kevin Costner and future NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback Dan Marino to the Upstate, raised $500,000 for 30 charities. That is a record on the PGA TOUR for the most money ever raised from a first-time BUY.COM TOUR event.
The tournament is the only BUY.COM TOUR event that features professionals paired with an amateur/celebrity partner in a two-day best-ball competition. The 12 best teams (eight best Pro-Celeb and four best Pro-Am) advance to play for the BMW Charity Cup on Saturday. The professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $94,500 from the total purse of $525,000, while the amateurs/celebrities will compete for individual prizes and cash donations to the charity of their choice. All rounds are scheduled to, once again, be televised live by The Golf Channel.
South Carolina Charities, Inc., is in the process of inviting celebrities to participate in the 2002 tournament. Marino and singer Edwin McCain have already agreed to participate, and other announcements are forthcoming.
